There is no relationship that happens accidentally. If someone becomes a part of your life, it is usually because you have taken steps to ensure that you have a connection with the person. You don't get to know someone by happenstance. You must be deliberate. You must make an effort to call them, plan times to meet them, listen to them, get to know the people who are important to them, etc... If you think about every relationship you enjoy, you will find this to be true.

The same concept applies to our relationship with God. If you want to be closer to Him in 2017, you need to be deliberate about it and plan it into your day.

One of my favorite Scripture passages is in Philippians 3:10

"That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made comfortable unto His death." This passage expresses such a profound desire to know God, a desire beyond just meeting Him on the pages of the Bible or on a Sunday morning.

I will share with you 5 very simple things I do daily that have helped and continue to help me in my relationship with God.

1. Plan times of prayer

Prayer is perhaps the most intimate way to get to know God. In the place of prayer we pour out our heart to God and we are open to receiving direction from Him.

"And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” (ESV. Matthew 21:22)

Even Jesus Christ regularly took time off from His work to pray and get direction, peace and comfort from God. The most notable example of this is seen in the garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed for strength just before He was betrayed by Judas (Matthew 26:36-46).

2. Have a Bible reading plan

There is a lot to be said for following a plan. Sometimes we feel that all we need to do is open the Bible an read whatever passage falls open. While this is reading, it is not a detailed study plan will help you grow your knowledge and understanding of the Bible. When you have a study plan, you will be equipped on a myriad of topics and will improve your walk with God.

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." ( II Timothy 2:15) (KJV)

3. Plan times to fellowship with the people He has poured His Spirit into

Whenever we meet with other believers we are strengthened and encouraged in our walk with God. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 10:25 "Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."  (ESV ) Without a doubt we live in very perilous times when the pressure of the world can cause one to fall away from the faith but regular meetings and associations with fellow Christians will give us the strength to stand.

4. Listen to Him when He is speaking

The Bible tells us that God will give us direction on how to live. Look what is written in Isaiah 30:21 "And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. " There are so many things that distract us from listening to God, from busy lives to the ever distracting social media. However if we do not take out time to focus on listening to God, we will find ourselves struggling through life without direction.

5. Avoid relationships with people who don't like Him

I am sure you have heard the saying "evil communication corrupts good manners, " it happens to be true and it also comes from the Bible (I Corinthians 15:33-34.) As long as we allow ourselves to be influenced by people who have no interest God, your desire to know Him diminishes till it is disappears all together.

Getting close to God will certainly yield great fruit in your life. Among many other things, you will have divine peace, direction, favor and stability.

My prayer for you is that in 2017, you will be intentional about your relationship with God.
Daniel 11:32b
"...but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits."

2017 has been declared the year of being "Empowered to Do Exploits."  Being intentional about knowing God is the first step you need to take which will put you in position to be strong and do exploits.

Happy New Year!
